The Community

New Britain is located twelve miles south of Hartford, Connecticut's capital. The population is 75,000 people. New Britain is the home of the Stanley Works World Headquarters, Central Connecticut State University, New Britain General Hospital, Hospital for Special Care and they New Britain Rock Cats, Eastern League AA baseball team of the Minnesota Twins.

New Britain's Culture and beauty is further enhanced by the New Britain Museum of American Art, the New Britain Willow Brook Park, Walnut Hill Park, and the Art-Deco architecture of the downtown New Britain.

New Britain is the 15th largest school in the State of Connecticut. The school system serves over 10,000 students and consists of ten elementary schools, three middle schools, and one high school.

The Schools

New Britain High Schools has a rich history dating back to 1850. Some of its famous alumni include two governors of Connecticut, Abraham Ribicoff and Thomas Meskill, several mayors of New Britain, and several nationally recognized artists, musicians, professional athletes and writers. Many local professionals, merchants, businessmen and school personel are also New Britain High School graduates.

The School moved to its current site in 1972. This building rests on 221 acres of land and covers approximately 400,000 square feet. The facility includes two large gymnasiums, a library/media center, several laboratories, guidance career center and computer centers.

Completed in 1999, a $15.6 million dollar renovation project has modernized, expanded and technologically enhanced the building.

The school currently serves over 3,100 students, the largest in the state. The student population is diverse in the socioeconomic and ethnic make up. There are approximately 190 teachers, most of whom have a master's degree and beyond, who teach the more than 250 courses offered each year. Classes are offered in levels ranging from basic skills to advanced placement in order to meet the varying academic need of the student population.

The fine teaching staff is complemented by an outstanding group of counselors, clinicians, and volunteers all working together to provide a quality educational experience for every student in the building.
